The Liberty Bell stands as one of the most recognizable symbols of American Independence. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this historic artifact — also referred to as the State House Bell or Old State House Bell — has captivated the nation for centuries.
It was the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly that commissioned this famous bell from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, with the order placed on September 1, 1752. Inscribed upon it are words drawn from the Book of Leviticus (25:10): "Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof."
The story of the Liberty Bell actually begins in 1751, when members of the Pennsylvania Assembly conceived the idea. They wanted a monument that would honor the 50th anniversary of the Charter of Privileges — the governing framework crafted by founder William Penn for the state he cherished. This vision led to the creation of a bell destined for the steeple of the Pennsylvania State House. In its early days, the bell served a practical purpose, summoning lawmakers to legislative sessions and alerting citizens to public meetings and official decrees.
Once the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in England completed the bell as ordered by the assembly, it was shipped across the Atlantic to Pennsylvania. Though it reached its destination on September 1, 1752, the bell wouldn't be mounted in the steeple until March 10, 1753. Trouble struck almost immediately — when it was hung and rung after arriving in Philadelphia, the clapper hit the side with such force that a crack formed.
Isaac Norris, the assembly speaker who oversaw the project in Pennsylvania, was left dismayed by the damage. He arranged for the liberty bell to be returned to England to local foundry workmen John Pass and John Stow. The pair repaired the bell not once but twice in succession before shipping it back to Pennsylvania, where it was hanged on March 29, 1753. To this day, their last names are visible on the bell.
The bell ultimately suffered its fatal crack in 1846, when it was rung in celebration of George Washington's birthday.
